Dogs of Chernobyl are descendants of dogs wich had been abandoned after nuclear catastrophe. Their life is not good. They are exposed to rabies by wolves and other wild animals living nearby power plant. They have problem with water and food acces. On their fur and inside their bodies there are radioactive particles – this is the reason why you should not pet them.
In article on huffingtonpost.com is wrote that propably there aren't any „immediate health hazards related to
radiation from petting the dogs" but radiation specialist Lucas Hixson "definitely suggest
washing up afterwards".
These dogs are also helpful for people. Scientists outfitted some dogs with radiation sensors to make a map of radiation levels.
